The Number of US Gynecomastia Surgeries Drop Along With Their Price
Since 2006, the number of male breast reduction surgeries performed annually has dropped, and with it, so has the cost. However, from year to year, “gynecomastia” surgery remains one of the top five cosmetic surgery procedures among men.
According to a recent report from The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) the average cost of gynecomastia surgery in 2009 was $3,294. This was down from an average of $3,305 in 2008 and $3,455 in 2007. This decline in price has made gynecomastia surgery the most affordable it has been in nearly five years.
Gynecomastia is caused by overdeveloped fatty tissue in the chest area giving men the appearance of female-like boobs, sometimes referred to as “moobs,” (short for “man boobs”). To correct gynecomastia, surgery is required and is performed in conjunction with liposuction to achieve maximum results.
Gynecomastia can appear in men at various stages in life. Oftentimes, the problem can occur during the adolescent years. Although, in many cases, the problem corrects itself as the adolescent matures. Later in life, men may experience added breast tissue due to such causes as weight gain or drug use – situations that can often correct themselves, but may require surgery.
If you are considering cosmetic surgery to correct gynecomastia it is best to discuss your options with a well qualified surgeon. Only he or she will know if gynecomastia surgery is right for you and your condition. During a consultation, he or she can discuss the procedure in detail and provide you with a predicted cost for the procedure. The fees that are associated with gynecomastia may vary based on location and practice.
